<br />
I just returned to this blog after too long an absence and found that Google had changed it all around so it now is listed as Music and Movies. Well, F--you Google, thanks but no thanks.<br />
<br />
I have learned my lesson though. No free lunch! If you start a blog that is supposedly free, what is free is the true owner's ability to change it at will which is what happened here. I do understand why they did this; I haven't been posting frequently enough so they just consolidated my blogs.<br /><br />I came wanting to post to my personal blog: <i>What Now Grasshopper?</i> It still exists but I can't post there anymore. If I was so inclined, I can blame myself for my long absence. Did I miss some small print Google, saying I have to post with a certain frequency to maintain my blog?<br />
<br />
The problem is that many of my best posts are not about Music and movies. So bye bye Google, thanks for the lesson. If I want to have an independent blog that I control, I have to pay for it. Even then there are no guarantees, but free is for amateurs. If you or I want to get serious about blogging, be prepared to pay to play. This is reality folks. </div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It has been a while since I have been moved enough by a movie to want to write about it. This movie certainly did it for me, in spades. Interestingly, this is the second time I've seen it. When I saw it was playing on HBO, I remembered that it was very good and gave it a second look.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This is a truly adult movie, with some real culture and restraint, the kind of thing you would more likely see on PBS than coming from Hollywood. Based upon the novel by Somerset Maugham, it takes place in the 20s, and is set in real historical time. The main characters are British, and they are coming from that time when restraint of the emotions was the order of the day. This makes for some wonderful opportunities for these great actors to show their chops, and they do not disappoint.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The leads are played splendidly by Ed Norton and Naomi Watts. Diane Riggs is also notable as a Mother Superior. Ed plays a doctor and Naomi his spoiled wife. The action starts out in England but moves to China where the Norton character goes to first live in Hong Kong then later gets called to combat a cholera epidemic in the interior.<br /><br />I found this film gripping from first frame to last. Everything about it was well done. Beautiful cinematography, great script, great direction, etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The movie displays how life can mature us and teach us and open us to a greater vision. All the major characters go through real transformations under very difficult conditions.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">There was so much that was memorable for me about this film. To just pick out one thing, Diane Rigg beautifully plays a Nun running a poor orphanage in China who has devoted her life to service to God. In talking to the Naomi Watts character who starts out vain and self centered, The Mother Superior describes how she too fell in love when she was seventeen; She fell in love with God.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then she goes on to describe how her relationship with God has changed over the decades. Anyone who has been involved in the spiritual life for decades will appreciate that speech.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">There is so much to recommend in this film. If you want to watch a great adult entertainment, this </span><span style="font-size: large;">one has my highest recommendation. </span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I don't often find myself watching
movies a second time. But, while casting about on Netflix to find
something to see, I impulsively clicked on <i>Liberal Arts</i> for a
second watch.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
It was an easy choice, something
predictably feel-good. And since it held up very well through a
second watch, it was also an obvious choice for a review.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I had a wonderful liberal arts
education myself at a small “community of scholars”, Shimer
college. I mourn the dumbing down of America which has been very real
and sad to experience. So seeing a celebration of good education,
smiling over literary references and generally relishing the life of
the mind as this movie does is reassuring for me. There are still
plenty of folks out there with those values.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Josh Radner does a good job playing the
lead character who is a 35 year old alum of a college that gets
invited back and gets involved with a 19 year old student. Richard
Jenkins does great support as a retiring professor, full of doubt and
apprehension at leaving the prison/oasis of academia after oh so many
years.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The inimitable Allison Janney plays a
cynical Romantics Professor. She is never less than delightful to
watch and she does not disappoint for this outing.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Elizabeth Olsen plays the young co-ed
brilliantly, just delicious with nary a false note.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Altogether it is a sweet comfort food
of a movie, especially if you have a liberal arts education.
Recommended. </div>

<br /></div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Joaquin
Phoenix plays the lead in this very 21st
Century romantic comedy which won an Oscar for best screenplay by
Spike Jonze. The story takes place sometime in the near future. In
the unlikely event you haven't heard about the story, what
essentially happens is that the lead male character who is called
Theodore falls in love with his computer's new operating system, who
names herself Samantha and is voiced by Scarlett Johansson.</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Casting
Johansson whose only presence in the movie is as a voice was a bit of
genius. She is one of the most fetchingly attractive women currently
acting and this all resonates in her voice. So if it is possible for
some man to fall in love with a voice, this would be the one that can
do it.</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The
movie is a brilliant commentary on the current state of things, where
everyone is walking around with their attention on their iPhones and
various other electronic gadgets instead of each other or what beauty
might be in their surroundings.</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There
is an atmosphere of melancholy that pervades the movie, as alienation
is the norm. This film deserved its Oscar; it's a haunting script.
There is an ongoing sense of intimacy because so much of the time is
spent in whispered conversations. At the same time it is all very
sad.</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
What
we have here is a very sobering contemplation on the current and
future state of society and its preoccupation with artificial
intelligence and its attendant costs. Recommended!</div>

<br />
Blue Jasmine is Woody Allen's latest Opus. It has all the elements of all Woody Allen movies, and this one is filmed right on his home turf of NYC. So we get to be entertained by the neuroses and other emotional storms of stressed out city dwellers.<br />
<br />
That is if you are still entertained by this sort of thing. For me it has gotten a bit old. Curiously too, even though there is a solid cast of actors assembled with a really virtuoso performance by Cate Blanchett, the lead, for me a lot of the dialogue sounded stilted and formal. It is as if Allen has created his own form of communication, and all the players respect his writing too much to really lose themselves in their roles.<br />
<br />
Of course there are exceptions, notably Blanchett who does an amazing job of portraying a woman who works on maintaining her illusions until her connection with consensual reality becomes tenuous at best. It's Tennessee Williamsesque; and Blanchett is often reminiscent of Blanche DuBois.<br />
<br />
The human state of consciousness rules all here, and moments of transcendence are notable by their absence. So for those of us who live to be refreshed by higher states of consciousness, they are not to be found in this film. It feels a bit like reliving places we have outgrown and/or left behind.<br />
<br />
Quite evident too, is Allen's narcissistic projecting of his own issues for our entertainment. Like I said, sorry Woody but we are not amused. His solipsism is wearing thin.<br />
<br />
Different strokes though. If you still get a vicarious thrill out of watching the machinations of the upper middle class, then go for it. I have better things to do, thanks. </div>

The Artist and the Model is a classic
subject for an art flick. (Not a movie, not a film, A flick :)
Imagine you are casting this in Europe in 2013 and you could have

Naturally, we have to shoot in black and white.</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I don't know about you, but for me this
is sufficient information to want to see this film. The beauty of
this film is that it is spare and understated, and part of its
success is due to this simplicity. I would go so far as to call this
an instant classic. It is like a fable, timeless and profound.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Of course in my case, its special
resonance came from being an artist myself, who happened to have
posed for a sculpture with his ex when they were both young and
beautiful in a pose not unlike the one that is the final choice for
the artist in this film. And I was born in 1943, so I could certainly
relate to being an aging artist. But even if none of this applies to
you, anyone with an interest in art and a love of life will
appreciate this work.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I loved it, all except for the ending.
I won't spoil it for you, but go see this and we can discuss it. It's
available streaming on Netflix.</div>

Phillip Seymour Hoffman's tragic death
inspired me to take a look and see what movies Netflix might have
streaming in which he acted. I was pleased to find <i>A Late Quartet
</i><span style="font-style: normal;">which not only had Hoffman but
Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">This
is a superb movie which was sadly appropriate to watch at this time.
Like so many movies filmed in New York City, the city played a silent
but essential role in the film. In fact one could almost say that the
film could have taken place nowhere else.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">Hoffman

its 25</span><span style="font-style: normal;">th</span><span style="font-style: normal;">

group. Catherine Keener plays the violist. I can't discuss the plot
without spoiling it, so I will just encourage you to watch the film
to find out what happens.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">The
milieu is the life of a professional classical musician living in
NYC. The central music is the very dramatic Opus 131 late quartet of
Beethoven. Everything flows from that; the culture, the refinement,
the elegance is all a given. And the Passion with a capital P.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">This
is a very human drama showing how people with all their frailties can
be and often are ennobled by their art. It is full of metaphor and
somewhat melodramatic like the music they are playing, with these
three great actors and a great supporting cast creating a very
watchable, interesting and entertaining ensemble work that aspires to

<br />
There is a whole series of these Moving Art films which I found on Netflix. I give this one Five stars out of a possible five...I would give it 7 stars, it was that wonderful. 25 minutes of bliss!<br />
<br />
The Cinematography is by Louie Schwartzberg and he is apparently also the producer. The word superb is bandied about but I can't think of another superlative right now that better fits the bill.<br />
<br />
The music is by Ludovic Einaudi. I had run across his sublime music in a Pandora mix of new age music, and he does not disappoint here.<br />
<br />
The rest of the production staff had to be top notch too because this was just an excellent,uplifting piece of film making. It is totally appropriate to call it Art with a capital A and it is worthy of your purchase, or at the very least, your viewing.<br />
<br />

Actually, that is all you need. I'm sure you can find a place to buy it if you want to. I'm not making any commissions here, just sharing the love:) <br />

Promised Land is a movie about Fracking. It is well made but I found it more interesting for providing some background into why the Fracking companies have been so successful, rather than its value as a drama.<br />
<br />
Matt Damon, Francis McDormand and John Krasinski do well with their leads. The story they tell about the methods of the Fracking companies was enlightening to say the least, and really helped me understand why the rural landowners have bought this dangerous technology that more often than not ruins their land and water.<br />

The ECK or Spirit's first manifestation is as the Sound Current, and this is the foundation of all life. This Sound Current can be heard as an inner Sound, and its quality varies depending on what level of consciousness it is being filtered through.<br />
<br />
One of the manifestations of the Sound Current on the astral plane, or the plane of emotions, is Gospel. The Joyful Noise is all about this uplifting and exuberant Sound as it manifests on the plane of feelings.<br />
<br />
This is an old fashioned corny Hollywood movie. Does it manipulate your emotions? Of course! I think the best attitude to take in watching and listening to a movie like this is: Bring it on! Be like a little child and just enjoy it. It is pretty irresistible anyway:)<br />
<br />
This is modern gospel too, ala, Michael Jackson, Sly Stone etc, so it really rocks! <br />
<br />
Like all great gospel music, it opens the heart and uplifts and makes you feel Happy! What's not to like? Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton, Keke Palmer, Cortney Vance, and a very talented musical cast make the whole production a delight. Is it predictable? Duh? And again I say so what? Bring it on. We all need to see another happy ending. Recommended!<br />

This is a fascinating film that will be of special interest to those of us who are interested in higher states of consciousness, karma and reincarnation, and the survival of Soul.<br />
<br />
Its a Brazilian film with subtitles. I discovered that the film is the second most expensive ever made in Brazil. I mention this because it is apparent that this is not an Indie film; it looks like a major production and the professional values are appreciated since it is a look into the Astral plane; it is quite breathtaking.<br />
<br />
I found it interesting on many levels. Culturally it was fascinating to see the characters speaking Portuguese and the whole thing taking place in a non-English speaking world. Every treatment of this subject I have ever seen was in American English so just the Brazilian slant was interesting in itself.<br />
<br />
The back story itself is equally interesting. I won't get into it here but you can find more info at this link. Particularly note the links to a You Tube video about the original author and another site which explores Spiritism, the path he articulated. All fascinating stuff:<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I realized soon after I started
watching this movie that I had seen it before. But I proceeded to
watch it through again, with fresh eyes.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;">A few days ago I watched a very
remarkable movie called <i>The Future</i> which turned out to be
written and directed by Miranda July, who also starred in, wrote and
directed both of these Indie films. I was so impressed with this <i>The
Future</i> movie that I looked up her earlier film, which is the one
that is the subject of this review. This 2005 film is available for streaming on Netflix.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;">If all this starts to sound a bit
Gertrude Stein-<span class="GRcorrect" grphrase="538e38ad0af9d13638f99dc11290959140f90a91" grtype="null" id="GRmark_538e38ad0af9d13638f99dc11290959140f90a91_ish:0">ish</span>, it's the effect of spending too much time in the
universe according to the very quirky and talented Ms July and
attempting to write about it. She is an artist with a very particular
vision. <i>The Me and You</i> film really breaks new ground and has
stuff rarely before found in films to be seen by the public<span class="GRcorrect" grphrase="0dd60e525ee8cec92daad45164f61d83b758adc6" grtype="null" id="GRmark_0dd60e525ee8cec92daad45164f61d83b758adc6_,:0">,</span>at least
in my experience, for instance children exploring their sexuality via
the anonymity of the computer as well as in person. It's
controversial stuff but July's approach to the material is so clearly
mature and non-salacious that it has to be seen as the art that it
is.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Real art always breaks new ground and
walks the razor's edge, and now having seen two movies by this
artist, I am starting to get a very good sense of her very individual
vision of the Truth. It is refreshingly real, unsentimental, and true
in a way rarely seen but often attempted especially in Indie films.
Kids, especially pre-adolescents are curious about and often
fascinated by sex. This combined with their inexperience and unbridled imagination makes for juicy stories. Coming-of-age is a favorite topic of filmmakers
since it is a time so rich and pregnant with feeling and discovery.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Sex, love, art, communication and
relationship are the themes explored here. Not just the kids
exploring, but the adults experimenting with marriage, separation,
divorce and reaching out for new love, new adventures and new
artistic expression. There is a potential Pedophile here also to make
things edgy and a bit dangerous. The way it is treated though is
artistic, humorous and with compassion. But clearly this is not a
film that would be recommended for or by the typical Republican
household. It no doubt has been dismissed with selected denunciations
and/or warnings by the narrow-minded. Lets just say its R rating is
appropriate.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;">So it is a given that the audience for
this movie is open minded, non-judgmental and sensitive and
appreciative of the quirky, whimsical and artistic. If that is you, I
predict you will enjoy this film as much as I did, even more so on a
second viewing.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This indie film was written, directed by and stars a woman by the name of Miranda July. This was my first exposure to her work. It is quite clear that what we have here is an Artist with a very particular vision. She does not consent to the consensual reality. Instead she shows us her version, her vision.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just like the cover, Miranda turns things upside down. Instead of seeing the Fu-ture, Miranda see it as it is displayed on the cover. The Fut-ure. This little off kilter reading is a very sweet exercise in mindfulness because it makes us take a fresh look at the ordinary. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This film is all about an exercise in Miranda's kind of mindfulness. All an artist can do is allow you to see the world afresh, and she accomplishes this. So you can call her quirky, weird, a genius or just Way Whimsical but she is just doing what real Artists do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is appropriate that the setting is contemporary LA and the players are young enough to have spent a good portion of their formative years playing in the virtual reality of cyberspace. This is the setting where Miranda's vision works; its a viable possible extension of reality that we can relate to by stretching our own vision of what is possible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The film moves slowly; it is always an exercise in meditative awareness. The most ordinary things are given respectful and sometimes crystalline attention. I found it to be most enjoyable and even though the vision was sometimes dark, it was always human and real and re-freshing. There was humor and pathos and much thoughtfulness. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There is a certain kind of sunset that we would call a Maxfield Parrish sunset. When we say a Rubens woman everyone with some culture immediately sees a rosy voluptuous woman. It is only a small stretch to view an interior room and think it looks like a Miranda July's room. She is that good...</div>

I had mixed feelings about reviewing this movie here because basically I don't recommend it, but I think it might be worthwhile to explore why.<br />
<br />
The movie is a formulaic Hollywood RomCom production starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. Saturday Night Live's presence is fairly large here with Ratchel Dratch also playing a role and the general sensibility in this farce borrows a lot from their approach.<br />
<br />
The premise is the complications that come from basing your life on lies to get what you want. Naturally humorous situations ensue as the house of cards is maintained at great expense. The problem is that sincerity of any sort is as rare as hen's teeth, and when it happens, they key the sappy music and you know that this is where they are supposed to touch your heart.<br />
<br />
It is all so manipulative that its a big turn off. The natural humanity of the likeable players manages to keep this from being a total loss, but I wouldn't waste my time. This is a fine example of the kind of movie this writer wants to avoid. Live and Loin.<br />

<span class="GingerNoCheckStart"></span>I loved this film. It affirmed my most closely held values, and backed them up with scientific evidence.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is a semi-documentary film made by the very successful film director Tom Shadyac. He was the one who directed Jim Carrey in the film <i>Ace Ventura </i>and he achieved wealth and fame as a result. He had the house in Beverly Hills and the lifestyle to match. A biking accident made him reevaluate everything though, and when he recovered he took a small film crew around the world talking to well known thinkers to answer the questions: What is wrong with the world and what can we do about it?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The result is this very positive, life-affirming film that is truly transformational. It concludes among other things that man's natural state is co-operation not competition. It gets into Quantum physics and the nature of reality in the most profound way. Please take the time to watch this movie; it is on my list of Must See!
